The original Pete's Dragon was a combination of animation, practical effects and the usually unconvincing child acting. And Mickey Rooney, a very unconvincing former child actor. 
The movie has been remade and the story changed. No more does the hillbilly foster family chase Pete down. No traveling quacks try to harvest Elliot for their potions. Now we've got relatable child actors, convincing 3D animation and some very beautiful New Zealand scenery.
