BSA203, Pro Prac, research, 1-2 March 2016

Idea: turn illustrated journal break up story into an animated music video

Investigative process:
Build story- keep old or create new
Animatic-simple story based
Narrator? Artist figure
Research self portraits
Collaborate on music with Deb
frida Kahlo
Fill in gaps with new pieces
Chick pic-lit

Working Titles:
Beating a Dead Horse: When ya gonna give it up?
Artery: Healing a severed Emotional Vein
Get the Hell Over It: Female Self-Portraiture and the Resolution of Romantic Disillusionment

Questions:
How can I show emotional healing through a series of drawings?
How can I subvert romantic fiction trope of happy ending = man and marriage
How does changing scale effect the emotional impact of the original journal entry?
How does the story/emotional viewer engagement/authorial clarity change/develop when an artistic pieces moves from 2D static images in book format to 2D moving image in animation form.

I am investigating what happens when a story moves from static to moving images.

The viewer is active when flipping through a book, viewer is passive when viewing a movie

Timeline:
February:
Begin class, figure it out
March:
All journals back from US
Story outline decided
Meeting with Deb
Digitize pieces to be used and fix as needed
Create new pieces to fill in as needed
Music writing?
April:
Scoring/recording?
Animatic and assets creation
May:
Bring elements together
June:
Exhibition

Considerations:
Women talking about personal/romantic heartbreak, anger with men. Gender and specific responses from critic and public
How threatened do people get when women assert themselves in a relationship or after a break up

Aims: translate static illustrated journal entries into a cohesive story with moving, animated parts and music. Explore emotional trauma and healing.

Activities: collaborate with Deb Wattes on musical score/song
Digitize entries and refine product
Analyze current entries and identify gaps in story
Create story using elements of journals and develop new pieces to finish story

Contexts: project framed by history of female sekf- portraiture. Autobiographical comics graphic novels
How personal artistic self expression is accepted by others
How the scorned woman is treated by broader cultur

Project strategy: the project will be conducted in the spaces left in my schedule by 3D but ranking above film history and audio.

Ethics: release form musician/singer/songwriter for their participation

Developing biography:  record key references with links on blog

Timeline: Gantt chart. Calendar

Where: work at home and school

Materials: personal art supplies, wacom cintiq and software st SIT

Method: illustrated journal entries in acrylic, water colour, pencil, pen, etc.

Would changing the scale of the pieces effect the emotional impact of the journal?

BSA225, plane part 2, 2 March, 2016

edge looping helps hold geometrical shape where shapes have gotten too smooth.  add edge loops to wings, fins and rudder, then hit 3 for smoothing.  An easier edge loop tool can be selected by pulling down the mesh tools menu and selecting edge loop tool.  This tool makes it easier to place the edge loops, as long as you click on the edge traveling the direction opposite from the loop you wan to create.

back fin problems: I didn't pull them evenly, so the back edges are fatter than the front edges.  The cabin of the plane is quite boxy along the top.  I tried to fix it by selecting all of the top faces and pushing them in.  That worked, somewhat.  To really get round, I should push an dpull more and from top and side views, I think.
Because one side of my plane was so bung, I was only able to create a wing on one side.  Vaughn showed me how to cut it in half and mirror it BUT AND I can't remember how to do it again.  Will need to do the plane from scratch and watch some tutorials.

duplication:  in object mode, select what you want to duplicate.  Go into edit and select duplicate special and tick box for more options.  If you want the copies to work in concert, select instance, orient them on the grid with the translate and rotate options and select number of copies, then duplicate special.  Translate orients the pieces on the grid.  I had trouble with this, so the first row of the picket fence is askew.  By keeping them in "instance", the next step of creating the points is easy.  you then select the vertice of the first slat and pull up with the move tool.  They all become pointy together.  The cage within a cage was made by using the duplicate special tool and making one bar with the cylinder tool.  Something about snap tool and setting the center of the pivot so each copy of the bar sits around the center, forming the cage.  Then, select bar, and go to duplicate special.  with 12 bars in a 360 degree circle, each bar is in a rotation of 30 degrees from the next bar.  make 11 copies to add to the first  and they form a cage.
