BSA324, BSA326, Maya to Zbrush and back, 31 March, 2017

Much excitement!  I started with a cylinder and sculpted Jellybean's head in Maya.  It's SO GREAT to be whacking these forms out quickly.  It used to take FOREVER and this time the only problem I had was some triangles that showed up on the top of the head when I extruded the ears.  Rachel had a very good fix: remove all the edges in the top "pie piece" and connect across like so:
Once everything is ready to go, save it and export it as an .obj, then open Zbrush and import it.
This head has been smoothed a little bit.  There are some problems with the program, namely:
There's this "jellybean head" tool that starts spawning Jellybean's everywhere and nothing else can be edited then the mutations get saved.... it just goes on and on.  Pain in the butt.  Still, progress is being made and I can go back to sculpting in Maya and then start again later, once Rachel has done some Zbrush diagnostics.  Ooh, as soon as I get a full Jellybean done, I can start 3D PRINTING.  Much excitement!

Got a body now.  I started with a sphere because it already had enough segments and then manipulated them until they fit. I took out two back "slices" to get the shell's width right.  This belly section isn't wide enough, so I fixed it up.  I know that I can fix it in Zbrush, but it's good to practice working in Maya until Zbrush's problem is sorted out.

And shoes and hands , too!

BSA325, waka concept art, 30 March, 2017

Tiny wakas, rainbow wakas... the funding proposal for Creative New Zealand is due tomorrow at noon.  Reuben is assembling the animation team's work for inclusion in the brief.  I made a waka in the style of the Maori men and women I've made the last few days.  I've enjoyed working on this part of the project.

BSA326, Zbrush, 30 March, 2017

DEAR GOD, ALREADY LOST.

Anyway, we're learning how to UV unwrap today.
there's a way of painting the face, if you have one, to protect it so the UV unwrap doesn't put any seams down the front.  top menu bar has a Zplugin button and UV master is underneath that.    I'll need to start watching tutorials (and pixologic's youtube channel) if I'm going to get this.
Topologize the face with that brush around the eyes, nose, mouth, so blend shapes can be made in Maya later.  Zremesh it so the polygon count After the face has been protected with paint, then uvunwrapped and morphed?  I don't know, it will come out something like this which means I can paint the face without seams in the front to bother me.  I suppose later I can paint it so I can paint the back of the head without any weirdness.  Not clear on that yet.  This is a terrible blog post. It's like I'm leaving myself little breadcrumbs to follow through the digital wilderness.

want to be in high polygon while sculpting, and low polygon when going into Maya.
How did I get two heads in there?

Zbrush pipeline (saved in class folder on y drive) Knowing this makes me feel better.  I will get this.
Basic mesh from Maya (good topology, UVs, export as .obj)
dynamesh (freesculpting and getting the basic shape right, constantly able to update)
don't have to worry about where or how many polygons are in the piece and don't have to worry about edge flow
when all the parts are there and it's looking like concept art, then we Zremesh (worry about polycount and topological flow
UV Unwrap (can do in maya, or UV master and enhance in Maya)
Polygon mesh (now you can add subdivisions, add fine detailing (bumples), polypaint basic texture maps)
Extract ready for Maya (export low polygon mesh in .obj, extract texture map for further detailing in Photoshop, extract Normal map, extract Displacement Map)
Assemble in Maya

if displacement map is too big for Targa and wants to save as tiff, you can save as tiff or change in Photoshop to 8 bit and then save as Targa
if normal map looks weird when loaded onto shape, check it out in UV editor.  It may need to be flipped over in Photoshop so it matches

BSA325, concept art for chiefs and old guy, 28 March, 2017

Historical research of Maori men's clothing.  The best resource is the oldest because the least amount of European influence would be present.  However, the recording, in this case an illustration, was still made by a European who would be interpreting based on his own cultural aesthetics.  Ben and I found a lot of resources at http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/maori-clothing-and-adornment-kakahu-maori

This is how I interpreted Reuben's brief- blocky silhouettes with some grey and white details.

The script calls for 70 chiefs, but not all of them will be detailed.  This shows how strong they are in silhouette.

If black and white is too strong a contrast, these runs show how the figures look with a blue, brown, or grey layer over the top.

Create concept art for TePuna and chiefs in style of illustrated book but based on historical clothing

Abstract:
Numerous schools are implementing youth violence prevention interventions aimed at enhancing conflict resolution skills without evaluating their effectiveness. Consequently, we formed a community-academic partnership between a New Haven community-based organization and Yale's School of Public Health and Prevention Research Center to examine the impact of an ongoing conflict resolution curriculum in New Haven elementary schools, which had yet to be evaluated. Throughout the 2007-08 school year, 191 children in three schools participated in a universal conflict resolution intervention. We used a quasi-experimental design to examine the impact of the intervention on participants' likelihood of violence, conflict self-efficacy, hopelessness and hostility. Univariate and multivariable analyses were utilized to evaluate the intervention. The evaluation indicates that the intervention had little positive impact on participants' violence-related attitudes and behavior. The intervention reduced hostility scores significantly in School 1 (P<0.01; Cohen's d=0.39) and hopelessness scores in School 3 (P=0.05, Cohen's d=0.52); however, the intervention decreased the conflict self-efficacy score in School 2 (P=0.04; Cohen's d=0.23) and was unable to significantly change many outcome measures. The intervention's inability to significantly change many outcome measures might be remedied by increasing the duration of the intervention, adding additional facets to the intervention and targeting high-risk children.

Abstract:
Prevention programs in schools are one response to youth, community, and family violence. Many of these programs target older children and adolescents. This quasi-experimental study evaluated the preschool curriculum of the Peacemakers program, which was developed by a consortium of social service agencies for implementation in schools. This program takes a holistic approach with children to promote conflict avoidance, conflict resolution skills, and respect for others. There were 101 children in the experimental group and 60 children in the comparison group. Teachers evaluated the children's skills before and after a five-week period, during which the experimental group received the program. Children completing the training showed statistically significant improvements in skills in contrast to the comparison group. Children's improvements did not vary with the child's gender. This study provides some support for the short-term effectiveness of this approach to enhancing the conflict resolution skills of young children. School social workers are in a position to be aware of young children's exposure to family and community violence and of the long-term effects of this exposure and can advocate in their communities for violence prevention programs that begin early in children's lives.
