 Historical research of Maori men's clothing.  The best resource is the oldest because the least amount of European influence would be present.  However, the recording, in this case an illustration, was still made by a European who would be interpreting based on his own cultural aesthetics.  Ben and I found a lot of resources at http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/maori-clothing-and-adornment-kakahu-maori

This is how I interpreted Reuben's brief- blocky silhouettes with some grey and white details.

The script calls for 70 chiefs, but not all of them will be detailed.  This shows how strong they are in silhouette.

If black and white is too strong a contrast, these runs show how the figures look with a blue, brown, or grey layer over the top.
