BSA325, trying to discover our direction, 1 March, 2017

Kate and Ben Bunting presented really interesting ideas and visual presentations of how we might do the Maori myths/backpacker thriller.  We tried breaking into smaller groups to discuss all three of the ideas but nobody could make themselves move.  We then broke into groups to discuss the three ideas people were still interested in, including the robots and the road trip.  The Maori presentation makes me want to do that but I'm not loving the group dynamics forming around that subject.  I couldn't come up with anything exciting for the road trip story, and only Mantis and Kevin wanted to try to flesh something out.  After 5 unproductive minutes of that we had to rejoin the group in the Boom Room.  The filmmakers, and some animators, wanted to do the Maori myth/legend and the rest of the animators wanted to do the robot story. There's a definite division and reluctance in the group.  We all put a concern or question about the group/story ideas into an anonymous cup and Rachel went through them one by one.  Here is a list of our concerns and some solutions.

Our homework tonight is to research visuals for the story idea we'd most like the group to explore. I checked out a heap of books from both libraries that focused on how legends had been illustrated in the past.  After watching Baraka, I was really drawn to the photography in one book.  That would give the filmies room to shine.  And another book was full of beautiful paintings, which would give the animators room to shine.  The two styles can be brought together to make a really beautiful piece that highlights part of what makes New Zealand unique and special: Maori culture.

Rachel found these films for us to look at for ideas:

Animation Research Ltd
Tales from the mythologies of Creation, Maui and Aoraki
The figures of Maui and his brothers seem to be carved from wood and covered with intricate patterns.

Maori patterns are used in many exciting ways through the short film.
The clouds look like the swirls I've seen in greenstone pendants
Aoraki, the tallest brother, becomes the highest peak when the brothers' canoe overturns and they all turn to stone and form the South Island.

Te Rerenga Wairua (1984)

This is a 2D animation that has some exciting compositional choices in each sequence.

Robot stories

The Nostalgist

Directed by Giacomo Cimini
This was an amazing little film- simple story, great VFX and robot design, and sad.  A good story.  What could be do with a 7 minute movie?
