BMA243, Digital Illustration, Nursery Rhymes: In Truth, 7 October

Jack and Jill, graphic pen, final result

Where Jack and Jill really did go up the hill
http://www.bathchronicle.co.uk/Jack-Jill-went-village-hill/story-11336515-detail/story.html

Theories abound as to the origins of the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme.  Many think that it pertains to the deaths of King Charles I (who broke his crown) of the United Kingdom and Queen Marie Antoinette of France (who came tumbling after).   Others insist that it is a reference to the size restriction imposed by Charles I on the size of beer glasses (a "jack" or "jackpot") in order to pull higher taxes.  This then affected another liquid measurement ( a "gil" or "Jill") which was subsequently decreased. (http://www.britannica.com/science/gill-measurement)

Is this the stuff of exciting illustration?  No, I say to you.  I have instead chosen the interpretation of the nursery rhyme based on the events of 1697, long held dear by the residents of Kilmersdon.  They claim that in 1697, Gil, or Jill, fell pregnant out of marriage to Jack, who was hit by a boulder and died before the baby was born.  Jill died in childbirth and her son was called "Gilson", a local surname.

With the aid of the graphic pen filter, I created an illustration of a section of the local paper relating the tragic and lurid events of Jack and Jill's demise.  William Hogarth (The Rake's Progress) was a popular printmaker and satirist of the early 18th century.  His style and depiction of the tumultous and chaotic morals of the time influenced the illustration.

This cuttting from an 18th century newspaper influenced type style and layout.

BDM127, 2D, Rendering for After Effects, 6 October

four and a half weeks until hand in for assessment!! 5 weeks and 2 days until hand in for Flix.

From now on, all shots for critiques should be in the animatic for story context and sound.

Tif or TGA1
TGA's hold onto the colour.  don't use Jpg or PFDs
export: render network

use F check? to check on rendering
dock F check on your task bar

Alpha channel is necessary if you want to put Photoshop backgrounds directly into After Effects
sequencing shots and motion graphics but don't worry about it on this project as it makes the file sizes bigger unnecessarily.  Rachel can force an alpha channel if needed.

After effects: new composition HDTv 1920 x 1080 25 frames per second
import as footage and targa sequence option when bringing rendered frames into AE
interpret footage - frame rate- change to 25 frames ps

compression type H264

I'll have to do this a few dozen times before it makes sense, I think.

BMA243, Digital Illustration, 5 Eyes, 5 October

5 Eyes illustration done in the style of The Simpsons.  The Kodos and Kang characters are my favorites.  Here 5 of the aliens with eyeball flags of the 5 Eyes spy services float in orbit above earth listening in on all of our communications.

My artist statement from a previous post:
"Our next illustration is based on the 5 Eyes countries (USA, Canada, Australia, UK, NZ) who spy on their own citizens, and everybody else's, and share the info around.  Some say, "People with nothing to hide, hide nothing."  What a load of horseshit:  Privacy is a fundamental human right.  And while I may not currently have anything to hide, that's only because, by the grace of God, I live in a time, culture and country that is supportive of individual freedoms.  Regime change, revolution, religious reformation: I've left a digital trail a mile wide that can be used against me by the wrong government.  The evidence used to try me will certainly include this statement."

These were the two other "sketches for ideas for this project.  5 Kodos and Kang aliens were going to sit behind The Simpsons and take notes on what they were watching on tv.  In the bottom sketch, each of the family members was going to wear a caricature of the national costume of each 5 Eyes nation while they each listened in on a phone, or tin can, to other people's conversations.  I had trouble with this assignment due to copyright issues.  If we were in the US, my use of the aliens would be covered by parody and/or First Amendment speech rights, but NZ doesn't acknowledge parody.  It should be covered by Fair Use educational rights, but it still feels like cheating.  I'm not sure how to do "in the style of" with The Simpsons without it recognizably BEING  The Simpsons.  I'll run this by David tomorrow to make sure that I've got the right balance.

BDM124, stop motion paperwork, 5 October

We moved our assets over to carpark closet thingie place and set up in a bay with stuff in the shelves.  Before we had cleaned it up, fortunately, I discovered a bay with nothing on the shelves.  Huzzah!  Working smarter, not harder.  We went upstairs to work on paperwork.  Ann and I got the timings done for the object animation portion and Ryan and Ken worked on the paper animation timings.  I checked out the camera until Wednesday.  I should probably work out how to use it.

BMA115, Comic, layout and expansion, 3 and 4 October

Everything is creeping along, incrementally, because so many subjects have to be dragged along at the same time, towards the same goal.  The comic is due a few weeks before the animations, though, so it needs intense work over the short term.  This weekend I expanded it from 8 pages to 12.  The first page is the "cover" and the remaining 3 pages were used to move stuff around and give the panels some breathing room.  I tend to cramp my text and it can't "breathe".  By increasing the size of the panels, I hope to give more room for the words.  That's going to take a weekend of intense work to sort out.  And colour, and inking will need a weekend each...  The figure on page 2 is awkward.  So much to do!
