Maya 2017 black hole mode tutorial
My maya doesn't have an aistandardsurface, just an aistandard texture so I had to make do with that. I changed the material of one object to aistandard then ticked matte and turned the opacity to one, I think. Just followed the tutorial for changing the object. Then I made everything that "black hole" texture and optimized the scene.
Using this tutorial, I went into After Effects and chose effect-shift-channel- take alpha from luminance to key out the black.
Huzzah!! Except, it's not any better for stopping an overexposed lantern effect. I'll keep playing with it. Something will come up.
