Joanna Buchanan's "Dream" music video by Ben Bunting
As I was animating Balloon Girl for this video, I had it in my mind that you would only see her within the confines of the eye and I didn't pay much attention to what was going on AROUND her. In this screen grab, that works out very well. She's centered, there are some clouds, end of story. The camera then goes into her eye revealing the whole animation:
Which is a TON of dead space, except for this cloud that inexplicably starts moving backwards after erupting from another cloud's back. Animating clouds on a loop was much harder than I expected it to be.
Then the camera moves in on Balloon Girl:
Better, but now I should have re-positioned her lower so the whole balloon and figure were in the frame. I was working off the idea that she would be entirely framed by the eye. I should have looked at Ben's storyboards because I would have worked that out... I did get to see the video before the last touch up editing and I could have lobbied to fix things up, so that's definitely on me.
I ran out of time to devote to the project. But Ben is very happy and his client is happy and I learned more about framing and timing which is not a strong suit of mine. And I enjoyed working with Ben. Hopefully there will be more opportunities to collaborate with him and other filmies in future.
