17 February BDM126 assignment: What's an animation that I find appealing?
Toys in the Attic (festival title: In the Attic: Who Has a Birthday Today?)
"Na pude aneb Kdo má dneska narozeniny?" original title.
2009
Directed by Jiri Barta, written by Edgar Dutka, and produced by Bio Illustion, At Armz, and Ceske' Televise (an international co-production of Czech, Japanese and Slovak companies)
Stop motion animation, with some traditional animation and pixalation techniques.
Won Czech Lion for Best Art Direction, Jiri Barta.
In its use of stop-motion animation, Toys in the Attic utilizes all the junk and detritus of a modern home, in this case, one set in what we assume was once a Soviet-dominated Cold War state. The movement is sketchy and jerky and each of the animated objects has a style of movement which correlates with its materials.
Aside from the usual delight I take in discovering the secret life of toys, I found this film appealing because it gave me a glimpse of what life was and is like in an Eastern Bloc country. Treasured childhood toys are saved side by side with an object of the repressive state, the bust of the dictator. The things that we keep in our homes past our interest or use for them can be quite telling: these items were once important but, for one reason or another, couldn't be thrown or donated away.
