Topic: What is an opening Scene?

Brave by Pixar/Disney studios, directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman

What does the opening scene say about the movie?  I can see from the clothes that the movie is set in the Middle Ages , and from the Celtic music and accents I can hear that it takes place in Scotland.  The beautiful forest is rendered in a realistic colour palette which makes the girl's red hair "pop".  The movie's central conflict between Merida and her mother is foreshadowed in the mild disagreement over the fitness of a bow and arrow as a present for a princess.  The family's "Regular Day" turns into first wonder as we see the Will 'o'Wisps, then terror as a bear attacks the party.  This opening sets up a world where magic is possible and danger comes out of nowhere.
