Morning session
Assignment 1: character boards
everything is on blackboard at my.sit.ac.nz
this paper will be integrated with BSA225 3D animation: the character I design in 226 will be the main character of 225s short.
characters should be humanoid (2 arms, 2 legs) to avoid complications to rigging.
cover sheet hand-in goes to blackboard during the day before the assignment goes into Y drive Dropbox, as always
character boards 20% due 18 March
3D character 20% due 6th May
animation text 20% due 27th May
character animation 30% due 24th June
visual diary/blog 10% due 24th June
plot out semester in Gantt chart that cross-references 225. Also, re-read blackboard class info for homework assignments that need to be uploaded to blackboard and by when.
This relates to nothing, but how cool is this? It's Kubrick's dead twins from The Shining and creepy dolls and disturbed London commuters going into the Underground. It's got it all.
dolls on tube and again here
Back to why I typed "victorian dolls" into Google in the first place: peddler dolls. I wanted to do a marionette of one of these ladies years ago. I find their silhouettes and trinkets really interesting. It would be interesting to have the speed dater by a junky space peddler who comes into the cantina for the speed date. I found these on pinterest and with the skirts made out of houses with little figures going in and out, that makes me think of other interesting story ideas. there's that Twilight Zone episode "What You Need" with the guy with a tray full of weird things that seem innocuous but come in really handy for the person who charitably buys them from the poor man. The story must be simple, short, one character. I really need to reign myself in this semester so I can focus on delivery a really good story. There was too much going on in Art2Art and the result wasn't good.
Afternoon session:
animated film that we watched in class:
A puppet man moves through a world of blackened, anonymous puppets who are controlled by an unseen fascist/authoritarian state. On his ride to work, he glimpses a freed marionette busking in the metro. He jumps off the train to find his strings have been cut. I really liked the movement of the subway car and the sequence where the snapping of the strings is perfectly accented by the musical score.
