BDM127 2D animation, 14 July

Project management: managing assets, short pipeline for a narrative animation to create a polished product.
Proposal due 7th August for 20%
Animation 6th November, 60%, and visual diary, 20%
Annotate and document everything.  Get into the habit of explaining where your ideas came from so proof of ownership can be asserted, if challenged, and so you're in the habit of accounting for your time.  Animators are farmed out in 6 minute blocks (10 units per hour) for ease of billing.  Get into good habits now!

Must Pass the visual diary in order to pass the paper!

Libraries must be set up so things can be reused.

Project folder for assets so everything is in one place.

Three copies must be in place at all times:  SIT computer, portable hard drive, and home computer.

Naming conventions:
use "cell padding" ex. shot1_0001
if you change somebody else's file (with permission) tag the end so they know who has done what

decisions: line work, shading, separation (getting the characters to separate from the background ex.: character has black outline work, background has shade outline, but no black)

Total Drama Island

look at colour palettes
has texture been added over the whole film
Adventure Time

one time flat shading, black outlines around characters, background is two-tone with darker shade linework.  simplest lines and low key shading is easier to animate and faster to render

Avatar: Last Airbender, backgrounds done in photoshop, characters have hairline black outlines

Triplets of Belleville: pencil style, then redrawn digitally to get hand drawn look, two tone characters with black outlines, more complicated backgrounds

Ben10 Omniverse: two tone shding of characters with black outline, shadows on bodies and highlights on hair

Chico & Rita  characters are two toned with highlights, hair and body, simple lines, background in this screengrab is full of cool colours, highlights and shading, more lines.

Dora the Explorer- skinny line inside, thicker line outside, combination of colour and black lines outside the character, photoshopped backgrounds

Affairs of the Dark French, done in coloured pencils, background is cross hatched in a different style than the characters

Captain Flapjack background has monotone palette and characters is brighter with variegated line

King of the Hill characters not in full view go to one tone if they're not in the foreground

Howl's Moving Castle Studio Ghibli- stunning backgrounds, finely detailed, which keeps the separation when characters are two tone with black outlines

Kirikou et la sorciere material texture over the whole thing in post-production so it looks like it's animated on cloth, strong colour palette

Spongebob Squarepants same style as Dora because Nickelodeon makes them both

Peppa Pig simple shapes, simple colours, rigged characters

Persepolis: black and white, from a graphic novel.  Backgrounds have texture and grey tones while characters are flat black and white and solid.

The Illusionist flat shaded characters with pseudo outline, backgrounds look like they're watercoloured

The Simpson's cheapest example of animation.  Flat shading, consistent line work, everything is rigged and templated so the characters walk or run the same way for 15 years.  Nothing changes, nothing is difficult.  The movie has shading, but the tv show does not.

TV
Waltz with Bashir graphic characters, no shading is black, backgrounds photo shopped with complex lines and grey scale.
