Whistle for Willie
The Snowy Day

This search is relevant for 2D animation and illustration.  One of my favourite book illustrators is Ezra Jack Keats.  I love his patterned background, the simple and warped lines, the strong shapes and the sweet characters with their childishly big heads and natural movement.  I can see using the brick wall and pavement treatments and wallpaper pattern in "Monkey Saves the Daypaint!".

Peter from "The Snowy Day"

Another childhood favourite is Pauline Baynes work in the C.S. Lewis' series "The Chronicles of Narnia".  Her figures are separated from the background by composition and a ring of white that is created by stopping the line work and giving them breathing space.  This works fine on the page, but would need something more to work in an animation.
