Film reviews, 21 February, 2017

Rachel suggested lot of film and animation sites to like on facebook and their recommendations for things to watch are starting to come through my feed.

Nachthaxen (Night Witches)

A narrator talks about her time in the Soviet "Skirt Squadron", an all-female bomber squadron, in WWII.  The Germans gave them the nickname "Nachthexen", or Night Witches, because of their skillful bombing raids.  The film is made with animation to show the past and live action shots of the narrator's hands or back as she reminisces.  This could be a good way for both animation and film to make a project that makes all of us happy.

An animation based on Hieronymous Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights made for Stedelijk Museum Breda.  by Studio Smack in Breda, Holland.  Just  as WTF as the original!
And it's for a museum, which is very interesting.  It looks like Museums are up for some interesting stuff being made these days.
Studio Smack posted this pic of the installation.

Tower trailer
I heard about this one on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross last week.  In 1966, a man climbed up into the clock tower on the University of Texas Austin's campus and started firing a rifle.  He killed 16 and wounded 30.  On the 50th anniversary, Kino Lorber released their documentary Tower.  A blend of animation and live footage, the survivors are voiced by actors describing the events of the day and themselves as they recall the impact of what happened on their lives.

full movie  Just the trailer is upsetting.  I don't think I'll be watching this anytime soon.
