For the Nelson Mandela doodle, she used After Effects because she wanted to play with typography.
The size of the slides suggests that they were painted in another program, or by hand, and then slid "under the camera" from bottom to top to create movement.
This slide was moved left to right to draw the viewer to the next scene.
Her current blog is at tumblr.
This blog is a series of images and links, including to her Nellie Bly google doodle, and it looks beautiful, but I miss the description of process that she was starting to delve into on the first blog. She may speak elsewhere on the web about how she makes her animations, so I'll keep searching.
