could use puppets to be acting stand-ins which I then put animation over.  That would be helpful.  Here are some pics from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and their puppet stand-ins.

The dragon is from something else- possibly his scales were added digitally.  That's also an interesting technique.  The puppet could have a moving face with expression and then have cg elements.
