Internship breakdown
You must provide information on how you wish to break down you industry hours, ie are you hoping to spend all your time with one provider or do you wish to spread this over a couple of providers. Justify your choice in relation to the experience you are hoping it will provide.
·         Cover letter/email
·         Detailed explanation on why you have chosen these providers
·         How this will benefit your career options
·         Dates and times of negotiated hours for internship.
·         Provide a workable plan for completing hours by November
·         Provide an impact assessment on your workload

I purchased tickets to go back to Auckland for the semester break, 24 June to 6 July.  I will stay with friends in Herne Bay or in the central city and will look for providers nearby.  I will seek internships there that net me at least 75 hours out of the total 100.  My first choice is to work at Pop-Up Workshop and learn about filming with puppets and how they incorporate VFX into their show.  My goal will be to learn how the various elements of a kid's show are brought together and on what time frame they work.  This is of particular interest as I am developing a show with puppet and animated elements.  If my dates don't coincide with their production, I will pursue a placement with a museum or one of the other animation studios in town.  In the case of an Auckland internship, my workload will only be affected by my absence from Invercargill and reduction of output for my personal project.  Hours undertaken in Invercargill will be negotiated to occur on the weekends or evenings and will be spread out over a few months.  Possible internship opportunties may exist with Pop-Up Workshop, Mukpuddy Animation, Auckland War Memorial Museum, or a production company that has done ad work for Westpac NZ.

To get work experience and network in Invercargill, I will look for a 25 hour placement with one of the local museums.  Museums are my second area of interest because I have always liked the concept of Translation: how do we communicate different ideas to people in a way that makes sense to them?  Museums need to do that all the time because their collections are full of pieces from different eras, people groups, and geographical areas than those with which their visitors are familiar.  Translation also occurs within children's TV as there are life lessons and ideas that we want to relate to children in a way that makes sense to them.  Possible internship opportunities may exist with Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Bill Richardson's Transport World, and Classic Motorcycle Mecca.

Auckland War Memorial Museum/MoTAT/Maritime museum

Auckland is home to a variety of cultural institutions including the Auckland War Memorial Museum, the Museum of Transport and Technology, Maritime Museum, and Auckland Art Gallery.  The use of animation to enhance the visitor experience in museums would be an interesting arena to explore, so I will ask about an internship with one of these institutions.  I volunteered at the Auckland War Memorial Museum when I first moved to Auckland and I love the space and their collections.  They have a large kids learning area, Māori and Pacific collections, significant natural history resources, social and military history collections, as well as decorative arts and pictorial collections.

Internships are project-based and restricted to a particular section of the Museum.  They can be one month to six months long and hours and projects are negotiated with the internship supervisor.  I would pursue the opportunity to work in the Weird and Wonderful kid center.

Pop-Up Workshop

is an Auckland-based company that "specialises in communicating with children in a fun and entertaining way".  According to their website, they like to create characters that children can touch and relate to on their level.  They want to communicate with children as peers rather than authority figures and their writing reflects this.  They work with animation studios but their day to day business is filming puppet segments for their production.  They produced Ratbag  Oral Health TVCs with Southern District Board and Maori Television and The Moe Show is currently screening on TV3.
Jeremy Dillon writes, directs and performs for the show.  A client that I did a lot of work with in Auckland, Jamie Linehan from Media Works, recommended that I call Jeremy since I want to work in children's TV.  I really liked the Ratbag TVCs and The Moe Show is great!  It's gone from 11 minute to 30 minute shows with a live tour in the works.  Mr. Dillon is doing what I would like to do and that will make working with his production an invaluable experience.

Mukpuddy

is an animation studio based in Auckland specializing in 2D animation and "making cartoons".  Mukpuddy has entered the 48 Hours Film Festival many times over the years and usually wins the animation category and were the first animation studio to make it to the Auckland finals.  Barefoot Bandits, a very funny cartoon, screens on TV2, screens on TVNZ On Demand, and is supported with funding from NZ On Air.  Jamie Linehan also recommended that I call them as he and Ben Boyce worked with them to develop a cartoon pilot "The Stallion".

Westpac Bank, corporate animation

I worked with Lauren Lau, Head of Corporate Communications at Westpac Banking Group NZ and her team on in-house events that required fancy dress costumes.  I've always been impressed by what a good communicator she is and what an interesting work environment the bank sustains.  I'd be very interested in how they use animation to increase interdepartmental and customer communication. Assembly is a production company that Westpac NZ has hired in the past to create promotional videos.  They have a huge team of creatives that make their TVCs and shorts and have won awards in the past for their efforts.  Of particular note, they did the title sequence for "What We Do in the Shadows".

Invercargill internship possibilities

Southern Institute of Technology Productions

SIT Productions is a small professional production team run out of SIT’s Downtown Campus.
Production staff are always around and very approachable.  Many are graduates of SIT's program and are uniquely placed to extend and enhance lessons learned in the classroom.  When they were looking for intern applicants last month, James Wilkinson asked for me to submit a CV that reflects the animation and costume side of my repertoire.  At this time, they are looking for filmies who can check out equipment or assist them on shoots but may need something more specific in the future.

Bill Richardson Transport World and

Classic Motorcycle Mecca

Hundreds of restored cars and motorcycles are on display in these two spaces.  Both museums are keen to be inviting places for car enthusiasts and the people that may feel forced to tag along with them.  A burgeoning collection of wearable arts from Southland's FibreOctave Wearable Art and Musical Extravaganza are on display and a cafe and conference/party venue also seeks to attract more business.  I'm not interested in cars, but I am interested in the people who rode around in them.  Animating a sequence with people from various time periods in and around the cars would be really interesting as would bringing the wearable arts collection to life.
