BSA324, Character Bios, setting and show premise, 22 April, 2017

Girl (Human) is creative, quirky and feisty.   Sometimes she loses her temper and does not know what to do with her feelings.  When this happens, she goes off into the Imagination Warehouse with Jellybean to work things out with the rest of the gang.

Jellybean (Armadillo) is made out of an old pillow and furry bean bag.  When under stress, Jellybean curls up with the puffy “armour” facing out for protection against conflict.  The “best friend” type full of unconditional love, Jellybean never speaks but honks like Harpo Marx.  Jellybean is gender neutral so this friendship isn’t constrained by gender roles.

Dr. Picklesniffer (Chihuahua) is made out of old medical supplies.  Dr. P is the “no-nonsense” type who prefers the fix it and forget it mode of conflict resolution.  He uses his stethoscope to “listen” to what the others are “saying” in their hearts when they’re upset.  He has a slight German accent.

Prickles (Puffer Fish) is made out of yarn and knitting needles.  He is somewhat small until something sets him off, then BOOM blows up in size and even more spikes pop out.  He is over-reactive and in-your-face angry during conflicts.  The “tough guy” type, he collects socks, SINGLE socks, and proudly displays them on the wall.

Flash the Super-Connected (Rabbit) is made out of computer cables, webcams, and other hi-tech detritus.  The “joker” type, he is constantly tracking his progress on his “wit-bit” and runs away to plug into the internet- anything to avoid conflict.  His greatest hero is Thaddeus Thumper the Third, Explorer.

Teppy (Tuatara) is made out of tarnished silver tea service parts.  The “girlie-girl” type, she loves anything flashy.  She cries whenever anyone tries to hold her to account and then snaps her jaws at them, ending the whole performance with a charming smile to smooth things over.

Goldie (Possum) is made out of that pasta that used to be sold in gift jars but nobody actually eats.  The “worry wart” type, Goldie compulsively binge eats from the swirls of pasta she’s made of when she gets stressed out.  Because possums are an introduced species in New Zealand, Goldie should be a voice for immigrants and others who are trying to navigate multiple cultural customs at the same time.

Show premise
Girl is a great kid AND sometimes loses her temper.  When things frustrate her or her emotions are out of control, she takes some time out to think about it.  Her favourite spot to think is on an old beanbag.  The beanbag comes to life as Jellybean, a giant armadillo, who takes her to the Imagination Warehouse to work through the problem with a cast of colourful characters.  Whatever she’s dealing with, so are they.  Girl gets to fully explore her feelings, name them with the help of her friends, and discover the right, fair, and workable solution that she takes back to the real world at the end of the episode.

The Imagination Warehouse

Girl’s head is full of amazing things! and The Imagination Warehouse is where they’re all stored.  She’s a big kid so the piles are all up on shelves that seem to go on forever.  Some of the aisles end in big curtains that everybody says she’ll get to look behind when she’s 12.  Some of the piles of stuff come to life as creatures that all deal with emotions and conflict in different ways.  Other things on the shelves might represent issues Girl is dealing with or serve to “dress the set” of the Warehouse as she play acts with her friends.
